The Journal
Things worth writing down, mostly so we would remember what month they happened in.
A Month
It got cold, then it got warm
The weather changed, the way it does. We noticed, and then we wrote it down here so we would not forget.
Read
For a week it was cold enough that the wood stove earned its keep. We split more than we meant to and stacked it under the eave, which is the part of a cold week nobody photographs.
Then it turned, all at once, the way it does here. A guest in The Old One left the door open the whole afternoon and said the room smelled like the outside. We took that as a compliment and wrote it down.
Another Month
On not having Wi-Fi in the far room
Why we never ran the line out to the far room, and why guests stopped asking about it after the first night.
Read
People ask, when they book, whether the far room has Wi-Fi. It does not. We never ran the line out that way, and at some point not running it became the point.
There is signal up by the main house if you need to make a call, and there is a landline for anything real. The first night, a few guests look for the network out of habit. By the second night, nobody mentions it. That has been true for years, which is why we keep it the way it is.
Some Month
A quiet night, of which there are many
It was quiet. Nothing happened, which is more or less what people come here for. We wrote that down too.
Read
Nothing happened. The water made its sound over the rocks. A bird that we have never identified made its sound back. Somewhere a screen door closed once and did not close again.
This is the part we have the hardest time explaining to people before they come, and the easiest time explaining after. There is a kind of evening that does not require anything of you. We have a lot of them.
Early In The Year
The first warm day
A day that felt like the season had decided, on its own, to start. We opened a window. That was the whole event.

You can feel it before you can name it. The light gets a different angle on the floorboards and the cold goes out of the air by mid-morning. We opened the window in the kitchen and left it open.
That was the whole event. We are aware it does not sound like much. It was, in fact, not much, and it was also the best day in a while.
